2-Nitrophenyl dodecyl ether (ETh 217) is a plasticizer for solvent polymeric membranes in ion-selective electrodes that has been used for over 30 years. It exhibits desirable lipophilicity characteristics without apparent deteriorating influence on ion selectivity. It is used as a highly viscous plasticizer (solid at room temperature) and PVC as a membrane matrix for nitrate ISFETs. As a nitro-aromatic solvent it was also used to enhance extraction of nonpolar drugs during a study to demonstrate different approaches of basic drugs to maximize extraction recovery using electro membrane extraction method.
