IPTG is a molecular biology reagent. It is a β-Galactosidase activity inducer in several bacteria, by binding and inhibiting the lac repressor and it is used in gene cloning together with X-Gal, in a technique called blue/white screening. It is used in the concentration range of 100µM – 1.5mM to induce protein expression. IPTG distinguishes between recombinant and non-recombinant plasmids carrying the β-galactosidase gene.
